Lambda Work to Aid Hurricane Katrina Victims

CLIFTON, NJ, March 3, 2006 – In response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in and around Louisiana and Mississippi, Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., began a nationwide fundraising campaign. As a result of this initiative, last month, the fraternity was able to donate $2,100 to Convoy of Hope, a non-profit organization that serves the United States and world by providing disaster relief. The organization has already setup distribution centers in Mississippi and Louisiana where they are distributing essential items such as water and ice and is working with state and federal authorities to expand their operations. The money raised was generated by contributions made by members of the fraternity through its website.

Lambda Theta Phi was one of three organizations that banded together to raise funds to help Hurricane Katrina victims. "After the Storm: Sending a Message of Hope" was launched in cooperation with the sisters of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the brothers of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. Beginning September 6, 2006, each of the three organizations solicited donations from their members and coordinated fundraisers by local chapters to support the effort on behalf of the thousands of individuals affected by what has been called the worst natural disaster ever to hit the United States.
News reports show that the hardest hit areas will likely take years to re-build, since many homes and communities have been completely swept away. All three organizations are proud to join the millions of Americans working to raise money for the re-building. The $2,100 donation came from the National Board of Lambda Theta Phi, but local chapters on both the undergraduate and alumni chapters have been encouraged to continue to work with other organizations to contribute to the long-term effort needed to rebuild communities devastated by Katrina.

Founded in 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. is the first college Greek-letter organization founded as a Latin Fraternity. The membership of Lambda Theta Phi is open to all college men who support its values of scholarship, respect for all culture, community service, and the advancement and fair treatment of Latinos. Lambda Theta Phi was the first Latin Fraternity to be recognized by the National Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and today, has 80 chapters in, New York, Florida, California, Texas, New Jersey, Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, New Mexico, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
